Nicholas Lawrenson (violin) wins 2022 JSO Award.
Last night, we saw Jersey's top young musicians compete at the final of the PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year competition. Outstanding talent was showcased across the piano, strings, woodwind, brass, and vocal sections.
The competition, which is organised by the Jersey Music Service and sponsored by PwC, celebrates its 30th year and for the first time was held at the new Les Quennevais School.
The JSO Award was awarded to Nicholas Lawrenson and presented by adjudicator Fiona Nelson, doctor and long term member of Jersey Symphony.
Nicholas, a year 12 student at Hautlieu School, swept the audience away with the Theme from Schindler’s List followed by the first movement of Bruch's Concerto No 1 in G Minor Op 26 and Paradis' Sicilienne.
Nicholas started playing the violin at the age of 6 under the tuition of Julie Millow and fell in love with the violin during his lessons with her. He doesn't just have one string to his bow as he learned the piano, guitar and flute whilst at VCP and completed Grade 8 violin under the tuition of Young Pyo.
Beyond studying here in Jersey, Nicholas hopes to study medicine and participate in a high quality university orchestra.
Rob Buckland, finals adjudicator, commended all young musicians live via Zoom and announced Augustine Stayte (piano) as the overall winner.
Well done to all the winners and finalists and a massive congratulations to JSO Award winner Nicholas. We look forward to working with Nicholas in the coming year.
Jersey Music Service live streamed the event on their Facebook. You can watch it here.
